Alabama is the consensus No. 1 college football team during the regular season for the first time since 1980. That's a long time. So long ago, that I was a 10-year old the last time it happened.
I remember vividly the day it came to an end. The Tide was in Jackson, taking on Miss. State. I was in the back seat of the car listening to John Forney's call of a late Bama fumble, an upset b the Bulldogs, and the end of a 28-game win streak. I cried. I don't feel so guilty about it now, since I've since been told there were a lot of grown men who did the same.
Early this week I asked the question, "Where were you when Alabama was last ranked No. 1 in the regular season?". I received quite a few responses, and those are shared below: Last time Bama was ranked #1 in the regular season, I was in college in Jackson, MS. Bama was on a winning streak and was upset by Miss State. I was there at the stadium when we lost. I remember Coach Bryant being upset as he left the field as were many Bama fans that day. It feels really good to be back at the top where I was used to seeing Bama in my growing up years. - Danny I was in Jackson, MS the last day Bama was #1 as I watched MSU upset Bama 6-3. I still remember the last play of the game and the fumble as Don Jacobs tried to score from the one yard line. It was not a good day. Don't worry. I'm not going to Baton Rouge this weekend. I am sending my son instead. He was in Athens and Knoxville so I am sure he will keep the victories coming. ROLL TIDE! - Rock During the 1980 loss to Miss. State I was 23 yrs old and playing in a softball tournament in Atlanta GA. I live in N.W. GA and the dawg fans gave me a lot of grief. - Mike Sadly to say, I was in Jackson, Mississppi watching Mississippi State snap our 28 game winning streak and knocking us off the top of the polls, 6-3. - Jeff |
